The Urban Canvas Positivity Project – Wilmington, DE

THE CREATIVE ARTS CLUB STREET ART PROGRAM

The Urban Canvas Positivity Project – Wilmington, DE

“Kind words do not cost much. Yet they accomplish much.” ~Blaise Pascal

Urban communities are surrounded by an explosion of advertisements, signage, and graffiti. The Urban Canvas Positivity Project is designed to empower the urban community to, promote awareness, and cut through the ‘brandalism’ and cultural pedagogy of their visual environment. Drawing inspiration from this visual chaos, CAC participants will be asked to look to their environment with a critical and creative eye in order to re-appropriate the public message into something of their own, something positive. This collaborative public work is intended to uplift the urban community through inspiring text and symbols left in unexpected places throughout the city of Wilmington, with a bit of intended humor and whimsy. Through this project the participants will act as guerilla street artists. They will learn and utilize skills such as typography, graphic design, printmaking, photography, and create site-specific artworks implemented with ephemeral materials including spray chalks and natural, biodegradable materials. In an attempt to take the museum to the streets, CAC participants will draw inspiration not only from works by contemporary street artists, but also artworks on view in local museum galleries including those on view at the DCCA.
